Join us on June 29th for an afternoon of doing and sharing a mish mash of fun activities, including games, a clothing swap, various crafts and more. Have something you want to do? Bring it! Feel free to share ideas in the comments.
The event will take place from 12-5 p.m at Growing Hope’s Ypsi Marketplace in Ypsilanti, MI - pop in whenever you can (we have the space until 6, so you’re welcome to stay until then, too, if you don’t mind helping clean up)!
Respirators are provided and required (i.e., KN95 or N95 masks), but there may be a couple unmasked folks in the kitchen while we’re there. We will also have CR boxes and a CO2 monitor going with the doors open — last time the air inside was virtually the same as outside!
Accessibility information:
Testing: Testing is not required for this event, but may be helpful. Some libraries and health departments are still offering them for free, so these may be good places to start if you’re looking for options. We hope to have some on-site to distribute, but will not be facilitating testing at this event.
Doors & Pathways: The entire space is completely stair/step free, with low metal thresholds in the doorways and a low-grade ramp down to the main entrance. All pathways are at least 32 inches wide per ADA guidelines (though many are wider, excluding door frames) and will be cleared of any obstructions. All doors (outdoor & bathroom) have lever handles and open out.
Ventilation & Filtration: At least two Corsi-Rosenthal (CR) box air purifiers will be running for the duration of the event as well as at least one CO2 monitor, which will be available to view at any time. All doors will be open for airflow (double door main entrance, single door back entrance, single-car-wide garage door) and there are also very high ceilings, with 6 ceiling fans that will be running for the duration. Heavy scents are discouraged.
Outdoor Space: In addition to the indoor space, there is also outdoor, blacktop space which can be used for socializing and activities. Much of it is in direct sunlight, but there is also a covered section where some tables and chairs will be set up. We also identified a little ‘bee hotel’ on the fence near the entrance (as well as lots of flowers and foliage around the space). There didn’t seem to be any hotel occupants at the time, but there may be some bees flying around, so please come prepared, just in case, if this is an allergy concern for you.
Bathrooms: Three all-gender, single-occupancy bathrooms are available inside the event space. Two of the three bathrooms are wheelchair accessible, and one of those also has a baby changing station. All three bathrooms have paper towels (not hand dryers) and lock with a push-in-to-lock, turn-the-handle-to-release mechanism. The bathrooms are down a short, L-shaped hallway, which will have a junior size CR box, and the bathrooms themselves have automatic fans powered by the automatic light switch. We hope to bring alternate lighting for at least one bathroom to help with sensory concerns related to fan noise, but may not be able to put lights in all three, so invite others to bring options too if they have them.
Parking: Parking in the lot directly across the street is free, and in the center of the block, so about a half block in either direction to get to the crosswalk, and then to the event space. There are 2 accessible spots in that lot and one directly on site of the event. There are also 6 additional on site parking spaces that folks are welcome to use, but encouraged not to if getting from the across street lot (or the free street parking down the street) are easy options for you. There is also metered parking on the street in front, but there should be plenty of options that paying for parking isn't necessary. There is no parking at the back entrance, but some metered street parking, and free street parking further down.
*Note that this event space is close to a highly trafficked part of town, but not directly in it, so it is possible/likely you will pass at least a few unmasked folks in the parking lot or on the way to the event from there. To reduce likelihood, if crossing at a crosswalk, it is recommended to turn left out of the lot and cross the street at Ferris, rather than Michigan Ave (this is also a shorter journey).
Eating and Drinking: Tending to bodily needs is important, especially with hot weather! With that, for many people, being in/around space where people are taking off masks to do so can be dangerous and upsetting, and is often the basis for exclusion from other social gatherings. As such, *ideally* all consumption of food/water will happen outside and away from the door and other people. Recognizing that that there are lots of reasons related to accessibility (in all senses of the word) why that might not always be feasible, we ask/invite you to please be thoughtful about this, so, if/when taking some outdoor distance doesn't feel feasible (also understandable), please prioritize doing things efficiently and not in a lingering way. A quick mask pull-down for the duration of your sip or bite (ideally not in proximity to people you don't know would be okay with this) before putting it right back on, or something of the like. Maybe finding a spot next to the garage door or a CR box too to help further reduce risk when it feels possible.
Organizers will also be prepared to support and navigate any snags that might come up, provide education on masking and the importance and priority of it at this event, etc. Folks who are specifically available to help with things like that if they come up will also be at the mask station, and/or wearing other identifying accessories, and engaging fully in the event, so will be prepared to respectfully address things like this as we notice them, and available to check in with at any time if you need anything at all. Thanks for reading, and, if coming, for showing up with these things in mind.
