Schubert’s works for mixed vocal ensemble and fortepiano remain virtually unknown. Our season opener highlights these overlooked gems, culminating in Mirjams Siegesgesang (Miriam's Song of Victory), a cantata composed in 1828. The work recounts the Israelites’ miraculous escape through the parting of the Red Seas. Its celebratory character stands in contrast to the more introspective tone of Schubert’s late compositions, offering a striking example of his engagement with historical models such as G. F. Handel.
