The Souris Valley ARC is planning to hold a Hamfest at the Minot Municipal Auditorium on July 8th 2023. As you know, this is the same weekend as the Peace Garden Hamfest. The reasons for not continuing to sponsor that event are
twofold. First, the costs at the Peace Gardens have become prohibitive, and in a post-covid world there are difficulties
associated with using a cross border venue. We hope that sometime in the future, we can return to the Peace Garden
and enjoy the company of our Canadian friends. Until then, we’ll do our best to sponsor an event that’s worth your time
and trouble.
Camping
In an effort to continue the outdoor element of the Hamfest, we’re planning several campfire events at the Roughrider
Campground a few miles west of Minot. SVARC members will provide a shuttle service (for people and equipment) from
the campground to the auditorium. The staff at the campground have assured us that there is currently space to
accommodate our campers. However, the campground is busy in July and anyone who thinks that they may be camping
should reserve a spot as soon as possible. The campground’s telephone number is 701-852-8442. When you make
your reservation, tell the campground staff that you are with the SVARC group, and they will try to keep us together. If
something comes up and you can’t attend you can always cancel your reservation, however if you don’t make a
reservation soon, you may not get a space at all.
At the Auditorium
We’ve reserved three air-conditioned rooms at the Auditorium. One is a big room that will be set up to accommodate
food service, an eyeball QSO area, swap fest tables, and special demonstration tables. The other rooms are set up as
classroom/meeting areas with state-of-the-art WIFI and audio/video equipment. In the next few weeks, we’ll be building
a schedule that, we hope, will keep both rooms active throughout the event. If you wish to make a presentation, have an
idea for a presentation, or you belong to group that would like a meeting space, please contact Joe Ferrara (N7IV) soon.
In addition to meetings and seminars, SVARC members will offer FCC license testing during the hamfest, so please tell
anyone who wants to get a Technician, General, or Amateur Extra license to hit-the-books and plan on being in Minot
July 8th
.
Visit the Discovery Center
Minot is home to the Magic City Discovery Center and the new Darel Patrick Harrington Memorial Radio Station
(K0MDF) is located at the Discovery Center. The station’s purpose is to introduce children to amateur radio. The new
station has both HF and UHF/VHF satellite capabilities. We hope that after the Hamfest, you’ll take time to visit the
station and if you bring children to the Discovery Center we guarantee that they won’t be bored.
More information
Since SVARC has not sponsored a Hamfest for a very long time, this is new to us. If you have any suggestions, please feel
free to contact members of our planning committee: Dave (ND0CW), Scott (KE0THJ) or Joe (N7IV). We’ll provide email
updates as activities and schedules firm up and, we’ll mail a complete information package sometime early in May. For
now, please mark July 8th on your calendar as the Minot Hamfest weekend, make your camping or hotel reservations and
be QRV for more information.
