Miniature Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Floral Arrangement

Let’s have some fun with Ikebana. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll discover the Japanese art of Ikebana through the creation of a miniature floral arrangement using locally grown, purchased and foraged flowers and foliage.

Irene will guide you through the principles at the heart of Ikebana, including simplicity, seasonality, movement, balance and harmony. You’ll also learn about the history of this more than 500-year-old Japanese art form and the traditional tools used to create Ikebana arrangements.

Weather permitting, we’ll take a brief walk near The Urban Ashram to gather a few natural materials to incorporate into your designs.

No floral design experience is needed. Whether you are completely new to Ikebana or have explored it before, this workshop offers a peaceful and playful opportunity to connect with nature, creativity and mindful awareness.

You’ll leave with:

• Your own completed miniature Ikebana arrangement.
• Foundational techniques you can continue exploring at home.
• A deeper appreciation for the beauty and philosophy of Ikebana.

All floral materials and a miniature glass vase are included.

Please bring branch cutters and/or scissors to use during the workshop.

About Your Instructor

Irene Gomulka is an instructor from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Japan and holds the rank of Komon. She has demonstrated and taught Ikebana at Leu Gardens, EPCOT, the Mennello Museum of American Art, local Garden Clubs and other community venues. Irene is also an invitational Ikebana Artist in Art and Bloom at the Orlando Museum of Art. She is the current President of Ikebana International’s Orlando chapter, Chairperson of the Sogetsu Orlando Study Group and a recent recipient of the Ikebana Iwaya Fund’s Memorial Teaching Scholarship. Irene’s Ikebana arrangements have appeared in two invitational European coffee-table books published by Stichting Kunstboek titled: “Master Class Ikebana” in 2020 and “Ikebana. Opposites Attract” 2023.
