Mini Relief Prints Workshop with Christie Tirado

You will design and carve a 3”x4” relief block, apply ink to it, and then hand-print the plate with a barren to create a textured graphic print. We will be using easy to carve plates, and a variety of safe-wash inks to print our pieces. This class is for anyone interested in learning more about the relief printmaking process. All supplies and tools will be provided.
*Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a black and white pencil line drawing of an image they’d like to create on a 3"x4" sheet of paper. By the end of the workshop, participants will get to take their prints, and their carved blocks home!

About the Instructor:

Christie Tirado is a Mexican American interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores migration, identity, and cultural memory through relief printmaking and mixed media, focusing on labor-related migration within Mexican diasporas. Rooted in printmaking and expanded through book arts and installation, her practice uses symbol, repetition, and gesture—carving, layering, and inking—to connect family narratives to collective histories. Tirado earned her BA from the University of Washington and her Master in Teaching (MIT) from Heritage University, and she is currently pursuing an MFA in Printmaking at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally, including at Tandem Press, Davidson Galleries, Washington State University, San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, The Sun Valley Museum of Art, and La Productora Gráfica del Bosque in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her work has been featured in High Country News, ProPublica, and Wisconsin Public Radio.

About the Program:

In Spring 2026 the Chazen Museum of Art and UW–Madison Art Department are teaming up to present a series of public workshops led by current UW–Madison graduate students. The workshops will be free, hands-on opportunities for members of the public to dive into artistic techniques or museum-related practice!

RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Walk-ins will be welcome as capacity allows.

Where should I park?

There are several parking garages within a few blocks of the museum. Limited accessible parking stalls are located in front of the building.
