One of the greatest joys of spring is the return of migratory birds, and May is an incredibly exciting time for birding in New Hampshire. If you enjoy nature, this is arguably the most dynamic and colorful time to be in the Granite State!
May marks the peak of spring migration, with millions of birds funneling through New Hampshire’s river valleys, coastal areas, and forests. You’ll suddenly see a burst of color and hear a symphony of new songs as warblers, vireos, orioles, thrushes, and hummingbirds arrive either to set up nests for the summer or to rest before continuing further north to Canada.
When you pause, listen, and stay fully present in your body while tuning into the birds around you, your appreciation of their uniqueness grows exponentially, as does your joy! This mindfulness-focused bird walk is a relaxing way to enjoy the forest and field habitats along Sandwich Notch Road while learning first-hand from an experienced birder, naturalist, and mindfulness teacher.
We’ll practice identifying bird songs, like the buzzy, insect-like trill of the Northern Parula or the haunting, beautiful melody of the Hermit Thrush. Lena will share her natural history knowledge, enthusiasm, and tips for exploring bird life outdoors, while guiding you to stay present and in tune with your senses. Deepen your connection to the living world by learning about our local bird migration through a unique meditative approach. Come and let your curiosity take flight!

About your Teacher and Guide, Lena Moser
Lena Moser is the Spiritual Wellness Coordinator at Plymouth State University, where she runs mindfulness, meditation, and other holistic programs for college students. She is also a certified Purpose Coach, helping driven, high-achieving women get clear on their purpose so they awaken each day with a sense of freedom, peace, and confidence knowing they are on the right path.
Birds, however, were Lena’s first passion; she got hooked on birding as a 13-year-old growing up in rural Connecticut. She went on to study ornithology at Cornell and Princeton universities, and she professionally guided birding tours around the world for three different international ecotourism companies. Before moving to beautiful Bristol, NH, Lena lived and worked on the rocky coast of Maine. There, she co-founded the Maine Young Birders Club, creating a community for teen naturalists to explore the outdoors together while learning about birds and other wildlife. She also served on the Board of Directors at York County Audubon and taught a museum-based ornithology course at the University of New England.
In her free time, Lena enjoys identifying plants, preparing edible wild fungi, studying confusing bird calls, and going on ample adventures and scenic hikes in the White Mountains with her husband and 8-year-old son.
