Vincent van Gogh painted The Mulberry Tree in 1889 during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in southern France. In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh described a “superb autumn.” That vibrancy is evident in the artwork’s bright blues and lush oranges and yellows. The tree is depicted with Van Gogh’s energetic brush marks and characteristic use of color. Among several other van Gogh works. The Mulberry Tree was included in the Société des Artistes Indépendants show in 1890. It is a good example of Van Gogh’s increased focus on expression and mood in his paintings during the last few years of his life.
