Mike Ladd (album release/instore) at Crate Records

Some artists fit neatly into a genre. Mike Ladd has spent most of his career making sure he doesn't.
On Friday 18 December, we're welcoming the one and only Mike Ladd to Crate Records for a special instore performance and release party celebrating Nonechosen, his new record on the mighty Backwoodz Studioz label.
For those unfamiliar with the man, Mike Ladd is one of the most adventurous and uncompromising voices to emerge from the underground hip-hop scene. Rapper, poet, producer, storyteller and musical troublemaker, he's been pushing the boundaries of what hip-hop can sound like for decades, moving freely between experimental beats, spoken word, jazz, electronics, punk attitude and outright sonic chaos.
From his groundbreaking solo work to projects like Infesticons and Majesticons, and collaborations with artists across the experimental music spectrum, Ladd has built a catalogue that refuses to sit still. His music can be political, funny, confrontational, abstract and deeply personal, sometimes all within the same track. Never predictable, never particularly interested in playing by anyone else's rules.
And that makes his new home on Backwoodz Studioz a pretty perfect match.
Founded by underground hip-hop heavyweight billy woods, Backwoodz has become one of the most exciting and consistently adventurous labels in contemporary independent rap. Home to releases from artists such as Armand Hammer, ELUCID and woods himself, it's a label that values originality, challenging ideas and artistic freedom over easy formulas.
Nonechosen brings Mike Ladd into that world, and we're delighted to celebrate the release the way we like it best: with the artist himself, surrounded by records, in a small room full of people who genuinely care about music.
Expect an intimate performance, a chance to discover the new record up close and an evening dedicated to the stranger, smarter and more adventurous corners of hip-hop.
No massive stage, no barriers, no unnecessary nonsense. Just Mike Ladd doing his thing at Crate Records.
Whether you've been following his work since the early days or you're only now discovering him through Backwoodz, this is one you really shouldn't miss.
