Born in the Sixties, not a stone's throw from the Chalfonts, Mike was inspired at an early age to borrow a guitar & learn to sing by seeing Julie Andrews in 'The Sound of Music'.
Mirroring pictures in his Aunt's copy of 'Bert Weedon's 'Play in a Day', the talented youngster first learnt to play left-handed (and upside down!)..before having to start all over again, aged eight, in 'classical' lessons.
Early influences were Billy Bragg & Mark Knopfler before, on coming to Sheffield in 1985, discovering various proper 'folkies', via a friend's records, with scary tunings & rainbow jumpers.
Mike started attending the Three Cranes, Red Deer & Teapot Folk clubs, playing a number of support spots at the Three Cranes leading to a collaboration with the host, Mick Ball (now sadly departed); first as a duo, then as the band 'Tyburn' with the addition of Craig Booker on keyboards. Due to demands of parenthood, Mike left the band following the recording of their debut album 'The Last Drop'.
After a hiatus of nearly sixteen years, Mike reconnected with live music, discovering The Crookes Folk Club at his local!
These days he is most likely to be accompanied by Robyn Gair - an accomplished writer, singer and instrumentalist in their own right.
Mike never finished reading 'Play in a Day' .
