Mike Cooley (of Drive-By Truckers)

Mike Cooley is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is best known as a member of the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. There, the Alabama musical style blends elements of rock, country, and Americana. Additionally, he is recognized for his sharp, evocative lyrics and distinctive guitar work. As one of the band’s primary songwriters, Cooley has written numerous iconic tracks for Drive-By Truckers. Further, his songs often explore themes of personal introspection, Southern identity, and social commentary. Alongside bandmate Patterson Hood, Cooley has been a driving force behind the band’s evolution since their late 1990s formation. Here, he contributes to their gritty, honest sound and critical success.
In addition to his work with the band, Cooley has pursued a solo career. To that end, he released his debut solo album The Fool on Every Corner in December 2012. The album showcases his storytelling prowess and ability to create poignant, introspective songs with a more stripped-down, intimate sound. Thus, the album represents a rawer sound compared to his work with Drive-By Truckers. Known for his wit and keen observational style, Cooley’s solo work highlights his versatility as an artist. Here, he has cemented his place as an influential figure in contemporary American roots music.
