Migration, Race, and Jewish Visual Art in Latin America and the Caribbean

This convening explores visual art by Jewish cultural producers and/or about Jewishness in relation to changing notions of race and ethnicity caused by migration to Latin America and the Caribbean. Being Jewish is an ethnic as well as a religious identity, which includes a broad spectrum of racial identifications that have shifted over time and in relation to geopolitical alignments. This convening and its subsequent publication will form an important resource on complex intersectional Jewish artistic identities in the Americas as Jewish identity is increasingly at risk of flattening and distortion today. The convening will unpack competing definitions of Jewishness within art of the Americas in relation to varied notions of race, citizenship, and ethnicity. Co-organized with Chelsea Haines, assistant professor at ASU, our convening features papers and conversations that explore the consequences of antisemitism as well as resistance to it from the colonial period to the present.
Speakers include Adele Nelson, Melissa Ramos, Diana Flatto, Anat Falbel, Olivia Wolf, Elisa Mandell, Dana Ostrander, and Diego Martínez. Our keynote speakers will be Dr. Sarah Casteel and visual artist Olivia Gunterson.
