Midweek Musical Matinee: "Ode to the Piano"
with the Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman Trio
Wednesday, January 21
1:00pm
In-Person at the Osher Marin JCC, 200 N. San Pedro Road (San Rafael, CA)

The Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman trio performs “Ode To The Piano”, a presentation of some of the most moving yet chronically underplayed jazz masterpieces of the 20th century.

In addition to fringe masterpieces by Duke Ellington, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Dr. Don Shirley, Geri Allen, and Bill Evans, special attention will be given to less-played works by Jewish composers and performers including Victor Young, Hyman Arluck, Yip Harburg, Larry Harlow, and Dorothy Fields.

This performance will be complemented by historical storytelling, in which listeners will learn about the pianists’ body of work as well as the more intimate parts of their personal lives.

Gabriel's New York City-based jazz trio includes his identical twin brother Eytan Schillinger-Hyman (bass) and Stéphane Clément (trumpet).

About the Artists

Born in San Francisco, now based in Brooklyn, Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman showcases a catalogue of originals and arrangements of works by Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and more, and honors the history of these master pianists with performances that are both soulful and hard-hitting. Gabriel can be found touring and/or performing in NYC with internationally renowned jazz artists including Christopher McBride, Lucas Pino, Sam Dillon, Tim Green, Erena Terakubo, Alexandra Ridout, Langston Hughes II, Tyreek McDole, and more at household jazz venues across the nation. He is grateful to have music take him across the world, as far as Norway and Iceland, and place him at distinguished spaces including CARNEGIE HALL (once as accompanist, once as arranger & performer), the French and Czech Consulates in NYC, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Gabriel is also recognized for his multi-modal approaches to music education: He combines jazz performance and storytelling, touring multiple projects including across the country, and has cultivated a large online community of learners who follow his Instagram for breakdowns of masterclasses by Barry Harris and other jazz legends. Gabriel received his Masters of Music at The Manhattan School of Music and a BA in Hispanic Literature & Cultures at Brown University.

Eytan Schillinger-Hyman is an accomplished bassist and composer based in New York City, renowned for his proficiency on both upright and electric bass. Eytan is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School, with a Master’s degree in Jazz Bass Performance, where he studied under the mentorship of jazz virtuosos Gerald Cannon, Ron Carter, Ben Wolfe, Donald Vega and Billy Drummond. With a vibrant career that spans the jazz scenes of New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, Eytan has performed at renowned venues and festivals including BlueNote NYC, Dizzy's Jazz at Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, The Monterey Jazz Festival, and The Anthem DC among many others. He plays for Matthew Whitaker and Langston Hughes II and has performed with acclaimed musicians such as Quincy Phillips, Mike King, Christopher McBride, Lawrence Fields, Wayne Escoffery, Caelan Cardello and more. He also holds dual degrees in Jazz Bass Performance and Sociology from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he studied and collaborated with jazz legends such as Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, and Eddie Henderson.

Stéphane Clément aims to blur boundaries between art and life, creating innovative works that inspire connection and transformation. Born in Miami, Florida, of German and Haitian descent, Clément is a multifaceted artist, designer, producer, trumpeter, and composer. In 2020, he joined Ambrose Akinmusire’s ensemble Banyan and collaborated on acclaimed albums with artists such as Derrick Hodge and Steve Wilson. Co-founder of a sound installation collective with Nicolaus Gelin, Stéphane held his first residency in 2024 and debuted internationally in Barcelona in 2025. He has performed at renowned venues like the Adrienne Arsht Center and The Jazz Gallery, and participated in residencies such as Black Rock Senegal. His career began with early recognition, winning YoungArts prizes in Jazz Trumpet (2018, 2019) and joining two Herbie Hancock Institute National Peer-to-Peer tours. He has performed at prestigious events, including the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition Finals at the Kennedy Center. Stéphane studied under Nadia Noordhuis, Ingrid Jensen, and Jon Faddis at The Manhattan School of Music.
