This year’s festival is dedicated to the late Ruth DeYoung Kohler II, who founded the festival more than 50 years ago.
Inside the Arts Center, an exhibition will explore Kohler’s life and legacy of through objects and art from her personal collection. The show will illustrate Ruth’s passion for and commitment to the Arts Center, visual and performing arts and artists, and the Sheboygan community. In addition to featuring works by artists who had meaningful relationships with Kohler, the exhibition will offer a timeline of important moments in Ruth’s life. Also, gallery visitors will be invited to share memories of Ruth and to create their own Ruth-inspired works of art through hands-on activities.
“Midsummer Festival was always one of Ruth’s favorite events,” said Ann Brusky, director of public programs. “She often reminisced about the first festivals held on Eighth Street, of working into the wee hours to get ready for the artists and crowds to arrive. It was initially called the Sidewalk Arts Festival, then later known as the Outdoor Arts Festival. But no matter the name, Ruth’s vision of a family event featuring myriad arts experiences prevailed.”
The festival grounds will feature artist booths, music, food, and art-making opportunities just as in past years, but the scale of the 2021 event has been reduced. The number of artists exhibiting has been limited to no more than fifty. In addition, crowd size will be monitored with the possibility of entry to the grounds being limited to ensure a safe environment for attendees.
Artist booths will feature a variety of media to choose from. Paintings, photographs, furniture, jewelry, wearables, wood carvings, ceramics, glass, leather goods, sculptures, textiles, toys, and more will be presented for purchase.
