It's a new month and a new Midnight Movie @ 8 at Ten10 Brewing's B-Side, where you get the best in cult cinema, beer, and food at a much more reasonable hour. And here we are again. Back to celebrate our favorite holiday and 2 years of Midnight Movies @ 8 with a double feature. This year it's a real rock n roll nightmare with a small tribute to the legend, Ozzy Osbourne, and a personal all-time favorite that as been in the plans since this whole thing started in 2023: "Trick or Treat" and "The Return of the Living Dead."
In the 1986 horror "Trick ot Treat," bullied Eddie "Ragman" Weinbauer (Marc Price, aka Skippy from "Family Ties") gets his hands on the last unreleased record from his favorite heavy metal musician, Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), who perished in a fire under mysterious circumstances. Upon playing the record backwards (because that's what you did to heavy metal records in the 80's, duh), he unleashes the spirit of Sammi, with disastrous results as the dead rocker plans to exact his revenge on the town on Halloween. Directed by Charles Martin Smith, and also starring Ozzy and Gene Simmons, with a cameo by Large Marge herself, Alice Nunn, and a soundtrack by Fastway, "Trick or Treat" just might be one of the best heavy metal horrors of the 80's.
1985's "The Return of the Living Dead," written and directed by the great Dan O'Bannon, continues George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" and cranks the volume up to 11. While exploring the basement of Unita Medical Supplies on July 3rd, 1984, new-hire and punk rocker, Freddy, and foreman, Frank, stumble upon an old cannister from the 60's misplaced by the army. After fiddling with it (because that's you did with old cannisters misplaced by the army in the 80's, duh), they release a gas that brings the dead to life. Unknown to them, a group of Freddy's friends are hanging out in a neareby cemetary, which is no good when the gas is released into the atmosphere and seeps into the graveyard's soil. Pure chaos ensues as everyone scrambles to survive the onslaught of the raised dead and the dreaded Tarman. Stacked with b-movie legends Thom Mathews, Linnea Quigley, Miguel A Nunez Jr, John Philbin, Jewel Shepard, Clu Gallagher, James Karen, and Don Calfa, with a classic punk soundtrack featuring TSOL, The Cramps, The Damned, and 45 Grave, this horror staple introduced the world to zombies' lust for brains and it has been party time ever since.
Come on by the B-Side at Ten10 on Saturday, October 25th to celebrate Halloween and 2 years of this zany cult movie night. Because it's a double-feature, we're kicking things off a bit early, with "Trick or Treat" playing at 7:00 and "The Return of the Living Dead" at 9:00, both sharp (for once, in spite of my long-winded introductions). As always, Ten10's full drink and food menus will be available, so come thirsty and hungry. Of course, it wouldn't be Halloween without a bunch of candy, so bring your sweet tooth, too. See you next month, boils and ghouls!
