Midday Murders: The Villar/Glennon Killing
M**der, a shocking verdict, and a second killing in the heart of old Pensacola.
In 1882, Captain Martin Villar, a respected Pensacola mariner, became involved in a violent confrontation at the notorious Half-Way House near the city's waterfront. Before the night was over, Villar had been stabbed. He later died from his injuries, and Glennon was charged with his M**der.
The case appeared straightforward. But when Glennon stood trial, the jury returned a stunning verdict: Not Guilty.
That should have been the end of the story. It wasn't.
Only days after walking free, Glennon encountered Captain Victor Lyle, a man who had testified against him, at Hamilton's Saloon. Another confrontation followed. This time, Glennon would not walk away.
More than 140 years later, the location of this tragedy makes the story even more remarkable.
Hamilton's Saloon once stood on the site of today's Bodacious Olive, where guests will enjoy lunch while hearing the extraordinary tale of two killings, one controversial verdict, and the uneasy line between justice and revenge in old Pensacola.
About the Presenter
Michael Earl Simmons is a retired Pensacola Police Department sergeant, former homicide investigator, police historian, author, and creator of Sweet Tea Murders. Drawing on more than three decades of law enforcement experience and a lifelong passion for Pensacola history, Michael brings forgotten crimes back to life through meticulous historical research, investigative insight, and captivating Southern storytelling.
