Mid-Century Inspired Palette with Susan Rossiter

Explore colors from the 50’s through the 70’s and create mixed media abstract paintings using acrylic, handmade papers and collage elements. I am inspired by articles created in the mid-century such as textiles by artist Vera Neumann, old rotary telephones, and wallpaper from the rooms of my grandparents.I encourage you to look around your home for a vintage item with color/s that inspire you and bring it (or a photo) to class. All Levels Welcome

Workshop fee includes a handmade paper and collage element pack, use of GOLDEN colors in all viscosities, use of Silver Brush Bristlon brushes,

• We’ll talk about color and creating a successful palette

• I’ll demonstrate how I layer opaque and transparent paint and papers until I get a piece I really like

• In between demos I’ll be walking the room to answer questions and check in with you

• Attendees will get a pack of handmade papers, acrylic skins and collage elements to incorporate into their pieces

• I’ll have some GOLDEN colors and Silver Brushes to share during class

• We’ll create 2-3 contemporary abstract paintings using mid-century palettes

MATERIALS FOR CLASS:

• 2-3 canvas, wood panels or heavy watercolor paper all prepped with gesso any size. (If you are a “fast painter” bring more) I’m using Ampersand Gesso Board.

• Water container, rags, palette

• GOLDEN acrylic colors in Heavy Body, Fluid and High Flow (bring your existing acrylic set)

• Silver Brush Bristlon brushes #8 and #0 Brights (bring your favorite brush set)

• GOLDEN Soft Gel Matte

• Palette Knife

• Scissors

• (Optional) Any other papers or mixed media items you’d like to use- I’ll also have some pencils, water soluble crayons to share

• (Optional) Anything you have at home that has an inspiring palette.

About the artist:

Susan Rossiter is a Mixed Media Artist inspired by the colors, shapes and patterns of the 50’s through the 70’s. By Mixed Media, I simply mean using more than just painting in my pieces. In college I studied fine art metals, printmaking, design, and art history as well as painting and drawing. I incorporate all of it into making my own unique papers and collage elements. Texture, composition and color auditions play a big part in my process, and I love my job- it gives me those good brain chemicals. I work and live in Ohio, between two studios and teach all over the country. My strengths are discipline, focus and an absurd sense of humor. Susan has had extensive training from GOLDEN Artist Colors and Silver Brush LTD andhas conducted countless demonstrations and fun, project/process focused workshops online, in Ohio and all over the United States for artists of any skill level.
