About this Event

At a time when so many are dealing with collective and personal grief, award-winning author and journalist Michele Weldon’s new collection of essays, The Time We Have, navigates the upending nature of this extraordinary pandemic era through a lens of love and connection. The author will be in conversation with Deborah D. Douglas, an award-winning journalist and author of U.S. Civil Rights Trail: A Traveler’s Guide to the People, Places, and Events That Made the Movement.

With empathy, vulnerability, and humor, Weldon explores personal and public life through moments of both joy and despair. The Time We Have is a cathartic read, paving a path through this challenging and revelatory time so that we might arrive at a sense of understanding and belonging with our new realities.

An award-winning journalist for 45 years and author of seven nonfiction books, Michele Weldon is a prolific and accomplished storyteller across many platforms and genres, with the continuous thread through her work of compelling narrative. As a writer, speaker, trainer, editorial consultant or instructor, she maintains a consistency of voice and a belief that true, authentic stories and accurate, masterful content in any form are her mission. Her other books are I Closed My Eyes, Writing To Save Your Life: How To Honor Your Story Through Journaling, Everyman News: The Changing American Front Page, Just Me And My Three Sons, Escape Points: A Memoir, and Act Like You're Having a Good Time: Essays.

Deborah D. Douglas is author of the U.S. Civil Rights Trail: A Traveler’s Guide to the People, Places, and Events That Made the Movement, the first-ever travel guide to follow the official civil rights trail in the South. Douglas directs the newly created Midwest Solutions Journalism Hub and is a faculty member at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications. Douglas is also a founding co-editor in chief of The Emancipator, a digital platform that reimagines abolitionist newspapers for a new day, where she currently serves on the advisory board. Among her many recognitions, she received the Society of American Travel Writers 2021 Guidebook of the Year. A product of the Great Migration, Deborah D. Douglas is Northern-born and Southern-rooted.

The event will take place in the MiniBar from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.
