This intensive workshop explores the essential drawing skills mastered by apprentices in the Renaissance Bottegas. Michael Mentler will demonstrate and guide students through charcoal, sanguine and black chalk, and pen and ink, revealing the materials and techniques used by the great Masters.
From Leonardo’s red chalk studies for The Last Supper to Michelangelo’s powerful sanguine drawings for the Sistine Chapel, participants will rediscover the expressive beauty of this Blood Red Iron Oxide medium that shaped centuries of figurative art.
Expect a tour-de-force visual presentation exploring the work of Leonardo, Dürer, Michelangelo, and others, revealing how these titans understood form, function, and proportion.
Curriculum Highlights include:
• The 3 Ps of the Proscenium: Placement, Proportion, and Perspective
• Mass conception and geometric simplification
• Planes and values for believable foreshortening and light control
• Function and form of major muscle groups
• 26 key bony landmarks for accurate anatomy
Daily Schedule:
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Lecture, discussion, and demonstrations
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch break
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM: Drawing from live models and master studies
3:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Daily review and summary
All drawing materials are provided for in-studio use. Participants should bring a notebook and writing instrument for notes.

About the Instructor:
Michael Mentler is a master painter, sculptor, draughtsman, designer, photographer, and author with over a hundred awards to his name. His work resides in private and institutional collections including the Pulitzer, the Mead Library, and the Dallas Museum of Art. He is the Founder and Director of The Society of Figurative Arts (TSOFA), where he mentors select apprentices.
