ABOUT
Born and raised in L.A., Michael Mayo, a 28-year-old artist, has spent the past five years in New York, drawn by its vibrant music, art, and energy. He completed his debut solo album, *Bones*, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. The tracks were recorded live with his band—keyboardist Andrew Freedman, bassist Nick Campbell, and drummer Robin Baytas—at Figure8 Recordings in Brooklyn, produced by Grammy®-winner Eli Wolf.
Mayo comes from a musical family; his father, Scott Mayo, played saxophone for Earth, Wind Fire and is the musical director for Sergio Mendes, while his mother, Valerie Pinkston, has sung backup for Diana Ross, Beyoncé, and Whitney Houston. Despite his classical training at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute (now named after Herbie Hancock), Mayo's music blends alternative, neo-soul, and jazz elements, inspired by a diverse range of influences from Bobby McFerrin to J Dilla.
*Bones* is Mayo’s first full-length album under his name, reflecting his journey of self-discovery and authenticity. “Self-transparency is important to me,” he says. The album features genre-defying tracks with elements of pop, RB, drum and bass, and hip-hop. It represents Mayo's foundation, the "bones" of his musical and personal growth.
Songs like “20/20” and “The Way” explore personal reflections and insecurities, while "Stolen Moments" uses layered vocal parts to create an emotive soundscape. “I’ve known since I was a toddler that I wanted to be a singer and tour the world,” Mayo shares, emphasizing the satisfaction of creating his own music over session work.
Making *Bones* also involved Mayo coming to terms with his bisexuality, aiming to be a role model for others. “In many ways, this album was a letter to myself,” he confesses. The album's dualities—juxtaposing a cappella vocals with electronic effects, and blending RB, neo-soul, and jazz—reflect his journey towards living authentically.
A true Renaissance artist, Mayo is multilingual, an avid Twitch player, and a supporter of Save Our Stages, aiding indie clubs affected by the pandemic. He also gives vocal lessons and mentoring advice via Zoom. The final song on *Bones*, "Hold On," features his parents, symbolizing the love and support that have guided his musical journey.
With *Bones*, Michael Mayo transforms his ideas into a rich sonic universe, celebrating his upbringing surrounded by music and the freedom he has achieved in his life and work.
