When photographers Ron Caplain and Michael Day realized that they had both spent a lot of time in Japan and had collected images of Japan over the last four or five decades, they decided to collaborate on an exhibit celebrating Japan in photos and collages. Michael Day is a wildlife photographer and is usually more interested in birds, animals, and insects than people. But when he captured a series of images of people in ornate costumes representing the many eras in Japan's long history in the Kyoto Festival of the Ages parade, Day saw similarities to the intricate colors, patterns, and shapes of the birds he usually photographed. Caplain used these and other images from Day's photo and graphic art collection to create a series of collages printed on Japanese paper. Join us Thursday, November 14th at 6 PM to view the exhibit, hear a gallery talk on the process, and engage in informal discussion on Japanese art, culture, and aesthetics.
