This evening is dedicated to the memory of The Music Mix co-founder and erstwhile volunteer, Michael Anderson, a long-time resident of Wivenhoe. All proceeds will go to Michael's chosen charity, Essex Air Ambulance.
Jazz/World Music group Nomad and the Chris Allard & Samuel Plackett Guitar Duo will be performing and have generously waived their fees, as have the technicians. Thanks also to Wivenhoe Town Council for waiving the hall hire feee.
Please do your utmost to support the event. Even if you can't make it/don't want to attend, there is a non-attendee ticket page on Good Show. Please 'buy' a ticket, so we can raise as much money as possible in Michael's memory.
NOMAD: Formed in 2017, Nomad's current line-up coalesced in 2019. The band has always played a range of music from around the world in addition to the groove-based jazz that was their initial style.
The band takes its name from Nomad Slang, a tune by French-North African trumpet star Ibrahim Maalouf.
Nomad perform original compositions inspired by jazz, but also by a rich mix of rhythms from Africa, India, the Caribbean and the Middle East.
The line-up comprises Dave Lee (Keyboards), Steve Duke (Bass Guitar, Electric Upright Bass and Vocals), and Rick Wills (Drums, Percussion, Vocals).
CHRIS ALLARD: Wivenhoe-based Chris studied jazz and classical guitar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 2000-2004, receiving an honours degree in guitar performance. He later joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and toured extensively until 2007. He was appointed Jazz Guitar Professor at the Guildhall in 2017.
Chris has worked, recorded, and toured with a diverse range of artists, including Jacqui Dankworth, Charlie Wood, Lea Salonga, Dame Cleo Laine, Sir John Dankworth, Carleen Anderson, Claire Martin, Jamie Cullum, and Madeline Bell.
As a band leader, Chris has recorded four highly acclaimed albums; as a composer, he wrote and recorded a piece of original tango music for the 2018 film Crowhurst. He was the opening act for The Music Mix's Launch Night in October 2022.
SAMUEL PLACKETT: Colchester-born, now London-based Sam is an up-and-coming and inventive young jazz musician. His musical influences are broad, drawing from contemporary jazz guitarists such as Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield, while his improvisational language pays homage to the great jazz improvisers, including Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, and Pat Martino.
In 2018, Sam released his first EP, Fresh Takes, with organist Mike Gorman and drummer Tom Jiggins. He then joined a quartet with saxophonist Frank Sebastian Weatherly, drummer Darren Hambling, and bassist Jack Monck, later forming The Unlikely Descent trio with Darren and organist Pete Whittaker.
Sam’s latest trio features bassist Oscar Ho and drummer Manuel Filgueiras, performing standards and original compositions. He is also an accompanist to vocalist Rebecca Tommasi and has regular collaborations with guitarist Tom Remon.
