The Sensational Story of the Mass of the Americas.
The Mass of the Americas was the very first Mass Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone commissioned from Frank La Rocca through the Benedict XVI Institute.
The Archbishop envisioned a new unity Mass honoring Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Patroness of the United States) and Our Lady of Guadalupe (Patroness of Mexico and all the Americas). He asked Frank La Rocca to do with sacred music what the Franciscan fathers like St. Junipero Serra did with Mission Architecture, take local culture and elevate it into the highest traditions of the Church, the true meaning of enculturation.
The result has been a spectacular new addition to the patrimony of the Church of which all of you who are part of the Benedict XVI Institute community can be very proud.
The Mass of the Americas recording debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart. This work has been heralded as: "The best piece of liturgical music for the Mass since Duruflé" - Dr. Michael Linton and "Perhaps the most significant Catholic composition of our lifetime" - Michael Olbash.
The latest review, in the May/June 2023 issue of Fanfare magazine raved: “La Rocca has managed to create a modern Missa solemnis that is undeniably stirring…seamlessly blending Gregorian chant with Latin American folk melodies, organ and orchestra with marimba, guitar, and hand bells, all instruments with deep roots in Mexico,” while concluding, “overall, La Rocca manages to create something that feels centered in Western musical tradition using components from cultures that have historically not been well represented in that tradition….La Rocca’s composition, and the Benedict XVI Choir and Orchestra’s performance of it, is awesome in both the modern and the ‘precise’ sense of the word. I was floored by the beauty of the music—floored, and then lifted to a different altitude of existence.”
Just as the Archbishop envisioned this great piece of sacred music is following the classic Catholic model: finding new audiences and lifting new souls to Christ by moving first through the great Cathedrals and next into parish communities (including many celebrations of First Mass by new priest
