About this Event
Please join us for the final in-person training session on the Metro Vancouver seismic microzonation hazard mapping project with a focus on Eastern communities. This multi-year (2017-2026) project is led by Associate Professor Sheri Molnar at the University of Western Ontario in collaboration with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and funding support from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. The purpose of the project is to produce seismic microzonation hazard maps of pre-engineered ground conditions within Metro Vancouver.
The project focuses on producing comprehensive earthquake hazard mapping for First Nations, local governments, and professionals in the Metro Vancouver region to better understand the hazards posed by earthquakes and to support individual, organizational and community-level risk reduction and preparedness.
This session builds on previous engagements including a workshop in November 2023, the Understanding Risk BC 2023 Symposium, and May 2024 training workshops held in Vancouver. This upcoming session is the final in-person opportunity for engagement and training with a focus on the geography of Eastern Metro Vancouver or the Stó꞉lō Coast Salish territories including sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie First Nation), q̓ʷa꞉n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen First Nation), Máthxwi (Matsqui First Nation), Township and Cities of Langley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, east Surrey, and east Delta.
This session aims to:
- Provide an overview of the project and maps
- Deliver hands-on training on how to understand the maps and use them
- Demonstrate how seismic mapping data has been used in the region
- Build capacity for uptake and use of these maps for a variety of end-user groups
To register or for more information, please contact us at: [email protected] – We would appreciate 3-4 representatives from your organization and carpooling if possible.
Background resources and training materials are available at: BC Seismic Microzonation Mapping Portal and Metro Van Seismic Microzonation Mapping Project Website. A final virtual session will coincide with ShakeOut BC in fall 2026 and will feature End Use Case Studies of the early examples of uptake and use of the mapping data around the region.
