Finger-weaving is a method of thread-twining used to create thick, sturdy fabric decorated in solid shapes of colour. It creates wear-resistant belts, tumplines, arm bands, and straps for bags or purses. The Metis People use finger-weaving to create our famous Arrow-belt (Metis Sash) with traditional patterns including arrowheads, diamonds, flames and lightning bolts. These vivid patterns are hand-woven with only the simplest of tools, making finger-weaving a craft you can do practically anywhere. Finger-weaving is used for a number of decorative and practical purposes in Metis culture, and enjoyed as a pass-time for the love of the process.
INSTRUCTOR: Kalyn Kodiak, $75
PROJECT: In this workshop, we begin with the best pattern for learning (the Stipple), and move on to more complex patterns such as the arrowhead and lightning bolt. Students will create 1-2 small pieces and start a third longer piece to finish at home. History and culture surrounding the Metis sash and our use of finger-weaving will be discussed as we weave.
INCLUDED: All materials included.
PREREQUISITE: None! This is a beginner to intermediate class. Suitable for ages 12 and up.
