Methods of Oil Painting with Teresa Ricci Thursdays, July 2, 2026, July 9, 2026,

Explore the two foundational approaches to oil painting—indirect painting and direct painting—in this three‑week workshop designed to help you understand how each method works and which one best suits your creative style. Whether you’re new to oils or looking to deepen your technique, this course offers hands-on practice, clear demonstrations, and a supportive environment to grow your skills.
Each session focuses on a key method:
- Day One: Underpainting (Indirect Painting) — Learn how to build structure, value, and form through a monochromatic underpainting, the classic foundation of indirect oil painting.
- Day Two: Wet‑on‑Wet (Direct Painting) — Explore the immediacy and expressive qualities of applying wet paint into wet layers to create bold, lively results.
- Day Three: Final Painting — Return to your original underpainting and complete a finished piece using the indirect method.
By the end of the class , you’ll have hands-on experience with both major oil painting approaches—giving you the confidence to choose the method you prefer and continue developing your personal style. Supplies are not included in the class fee. A PDF supply list is available in the workshop description.

Our courses are typically held in the lower level of Arlene's. Because access to the lower level is available only by stair, please let us know if using the stairs presents any difficulty for you in advance of the class so we can make alternate arrangements. We want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy and participate in our classes.
