Info: Wilson's Disease is traditionally characterised as a liver disorder, its diagnosis and treatment span hepatology, neurology, genetics and health sciences, which hitherto have not joined forces. By combining skills and expertise of a unique new multidisciplinary grouping of specialists in liver disease, neurology, translational and health science, metallomics and first in man specialised positron emission tomography (PET), we have an opportunity, unprecedented and unique world-wide, to demonstrate the value of the potentially multi-scale coordinated linkage approach. By making a step change in personalised management of WD, this would also serve as a blueprint for other diseases involving metal homeostasis

Info: In this work, we explore the use PET isotopes of essential metal micronutrients copper, zinc, and manganese, to image their in vivo distribution in mice following oral administration. We compare these data with basal metal levels as measured by ICP-MS and we highlight the opportunities and limitations of PET metallomics for studying metal micronutrient biology in health and disease.

Info: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of primary liver cancer, exploits copper metabolism to subvert anti-tumour immunity, driving regulatory T cell expansion through copper-dependent metabolic and redox pathways while inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and exhaustion in CD8+ T cells, culminating in a profoundly immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment that facilitates disease progression and resistance to immunotherapy. Targeting copper homeostasis, therefore, offers a novel therapeutic strategy to restore anti-tumour immunity and enhance responses to immune checkpoint blockade in HCC
