About this Event
Dear Friends,
antitrustitalia is pleased to invite you to its next Competition Lunch Talk, which will take place on Wednesday 10 July 2024 from 12:15 to 14:00 at the auditorium of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition (DG COMP) in Brussels, Place Madou 1, 1210 Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Metro Madou).
Daniele Calisti from DG COMP will give a presentation on “Mergers in Consolidated Markets and EU Competitiveness: the fewer the merrier?”.
The European Commission has examined in recent years several mergers in already consolidated markets. Transactions between two of four or five players have been on the Commission’s desks in multiple industries, with differing results. Calls for a more lenient approach, clearing these transactions with the aim of creating a “European champion” or fostering EU Competitiveness through economies of scale have come from different directions and are growing in the EU debate. Courts have been similarly ambivalent on this, until the recent CK telecoms judgment of the Court of Justice. A new wave of consolidation seems to be underway – how is the EC approaching it?
Daniele Calisti is the Head of Unit E4, Mergers in Basic industries, Manufacturing and Agriculture at DG COMP. In this capacity, he led many high profile investigations into EU and global acquisitions. Prior to mergers, he worked on policy initiatives at the Directorate General for Competition, which he joined in 2008. He graduated at LUISS University in Rome, holds a PhD from University of Rome La Sapienza, and an LLM from King’s college London.
Doors open at 12:15. Lunch will be provided at 12:30, the presentation will begin at 13:00 and will close at 14:00. We recommend arriving by 12:15 to allow sufficient time for registration and for passing through security upon entering the Madou building.
