This May, Mercury Chamber Orchestra and Musiqa unite to present an extraordinary musical experience, intertwining the timeless motets of Vicente Lusitano, a trailblazing 16th-century composer, with bold new works by contemporary composers Brian Raphael Nabors, Nkeiru Okoye, and Kyle Rivera.

Lusitano, believed to be the first published Black composer, was a pioneering figure in Renaissance music whose intricate polyphonic compositions showcased technical brilliance and emotional depth. Despite his remarkable contributions, his work remained overlooked for centuries. Now, his legacy takes center stage as modern composers bring their own voices to this historic dialogue, creating a unique fusion of past and present.
