Elgar’s Enigma Variations captures the soul of Edwardian England in a series of noble and stirring portraits of friends, family members and the composer himself. Roy Harris’ Third Symphony is a portrait of 1930s Americana, evoking vast, rugged landscapes and pastoral hymnody. Opening the program is Coleridge-Taylor’s rhapsodic Ballade, a piece commissioned after an endorsement from Elgar.
