Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Kids in a Warming World
Teaching and counselling kids can be challenging but supporting children on a planet that’s heating up can feel downright daunting. We want to be guides and guardians as we teach children about the world around them, and we also feel the natural instinct to protect them from threats and suffering. Climate change poses a dilemma: How can we help our children move forward with wonder and resilience while knowing that our warming world will likely impose tremendous difficulties in their future? This workshop offers effective coping for climate-triggered distress oriented for children and young people, which can be adapted to other age groups.
Although the environmental and physical effects of climate change have long been recognised, little attention has been given to the profound negative impact on mental health. Leslie Davenport presents comprehensive theory, strategies and resources for addressing key clinical themes specific to the psychological impact of climate change on young people. She explores the psychological underpinnings that have contributed to the current global crisis, and offers robust therapeutic interventions for dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and other clinical mental health conditions resulting from environmental damage and disaster.
The workshop will include PowerPoint slides with didactics, dyads, small group experiential practice, and in-depth discussion with Q/A. To create context, there will be a brief overview of climate science and climate psychology theory, but the emphasis will be on provide evidence-based, age-appropriate tools and activities that can be immediately applied in a variety of settings which supports kid’s curiosity and helps them build emotional resilience as their climate-change awareness grows.
The workshop will cover:
Key terms, issues and statistics.
Why climate-oriented emotional resilience is essential.
A developmental context for appropriate approaches.
The need for trauma-informed perspectives.
What is emotional resilience – a new definition.
Exploring climate emotions.
Understanding the developing brain and climate-oriented emotional intelligence. The importance of co-regulation (Polyvagal therapy) and cognitive biases.
The intersection of social and environmental justice. Empowering youth leaders and youth movements with intergenerational support.
Adapting climate resilience principles and practices to the counselling office, classroom, and other settings.
Emotional resiliency tools
