This comprehensive two-day training provides a practical and up-to-date overview of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA), designed to build confidence in applying the law safely and effectively in real-world practice.

The course covers:

• Legal and clinical definitions of mental illness
• Assessment under the Mental Health Act
• Key sections of the Mental Health Act 1983
• Mental capacity assessments
• Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
• Advance statements and advance decisions
• Applying legislation in real-life scenarios
• Overview of changes to the Mental Health Act introduced in February 2026

The training is delivered by a senior mental health clinician and senior academic, combining legal clarity with practical clinical insight. It is suitable for health and social care professionals, support workers, managers, and members of the public aged 18+ with an interest in mental health law.
