Using bionics to repair humans was science fiction 50 years ago – but science fiction has an uncanny way of becoming a reality. We are entering an era where engineers are building machines that are extending human life. In fact, bionics are fixing broken hearts in ways we have only ever dreamed about. In this talk, Professor Julian Paton guides you through the appliance of science for making new heart valves and pacemaker devices that are revitalising failing hearts. You will hear about AI-powered smart devices, their huge potential to treat heart disease and how, with the right investment, New Zealand could lead the world with this expertise. Given the huge impact of cardiovascular disorders – 18 million deaths worldwide per year and one in three deaths in New Zealand – Julian’s talk highlights why this powerful partnership between scientists, engineers and doctors is vital for advancing medicine.
Bio
Julian Paton is Professor of Translational Physiology and co-director of Manaaki Manawa, the Centre for Heart Research, where he works with a multi-disciplinary research team on novel devices that uniquely mimic nature’s methods as treatments for cardiovascular diseases. His love of physiology and many insights have come from connecting his hobby of tinkering with old Land Rover engines and viewing the heart as the ‘engine’ that powers the human body.
