Mending and upcycling-inspired embroidery workshop
About this Event
Rooted in Japanese textile history, boro is a centuries-old tradition of repairing and reusing worn clothing to extend its life. Sashiko is a traditional stitching technique, often using geometric patterns of running stitches to strengthen, repair and decorate fabric. Similar practices can be found in many cultures, where simple stitches are used to reinforce or repurpose garments.
In this workshop, we invite you to slow down, taking time to reflect on the value of handcraft in an increasingly fast-paced world.
Please feel free to bring a garment that needs mending or repurposing with you, or create something with the fabrics we have on hand.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in textile heritage, embroidery and traditional craft practices.
Please arrive at Leicester Castle Great Hall at 10:00am for teas and coffees, and an opportunity to explore examples of traditional Japanese sashiko stitching and boro textiles from De Montfort University’s Karun Thakar Textile Collection.
The workshop will begin at 10:30am.
