Mendelssohn's Elijah is certainly in the ancestral line of the great Handelian oratorios, and yet, no other oratorio comes closer to opera in its dramatic development of scene and character. Indeed, there may be no more powerful or descriptive story in all of Old Testament prophetic literature-The surprising protagonist's proclamation of the drought to come, followed by an overture of scenic proportions; the story of the widow and her son; impressive characters like Ahab and Jezebel; the epic scene of the priests of Baal and the fire raining down from heaven; Elijah's flight from Jezebel and his mountain cave where he hears the "still small voice": and finally his ascent by fiery chariot into heaven! Mendelssohn's setting of this astonishing story remains a work for the ages.
