Hand-Sewing & Iyengar Yoga Class

Join us at Solstice Style & Stretch for a unique workshop that blends the art of hand-sewing with the mindful movement of yoga! We’re excited to host Sara Mahowald (@mendandbend), a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and experienced textile artist, for an afternoon of creative mending and movement.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn simple, effective techniques to repair and revitalize your favorite garments—whether it’s a pair of jeans with holes, a well-loved sweater, or a t-shirt in need of some TLC. No prior sewing experience is necessary, and you can choose to make your mends visible and artsy or nearly invisible!

What to Bring:

• Clothing or textiles that need mending
  
• A yoga mat (if you prefer your own)
  
• Any personal sewing supplies you’d like to use, though all materials will be provided
  
• Snacks and drinks to keep you fueled!
  

Bend Break (45-Minute Iyengar Yoga Class)
Halfway through the workshop, Sara will guide you through a refreshing Iyengar Yoga session designed to open your chest, stretch your legs, and counteract the "shrimping" posture that often comes with hand-sewing. Iyengar Yoga focuses on alignment and uses props to make poses accessible for all levels—no experience required!

Instructor Bio: Sara Mahowald (she/her) is a self-proclaimed Duchess of Dabble, having spent most of her life learning a myriad of skills. She learned how to sew as a kid, and the love of learning new crafts with her hands has never left - she knits, crochets, cooks, bakes, lino-carves, punch-needles - the list goes on. As she ages she’s considered the impact humans have had on our environment, and mending garments is one of the steps she likes to take to decrease her waste and to combat fast-fashion.

Sara also is a certified Level 1 Iyengar Yoga teacher with a deep appreciation for alignment-based movement and mindful practice. After being diagnosed with scoliosis as a teenager, she discovered Iyengar Yoga in 2015 and found its focus on anatomy, structure, and precision to be transformative in managing back pain. She completed her teacher training in 2019 and became certified in the Iyengar method in 2022. She specializes in accessible yoga for all bodies, helping students build strength, mobility, and body awareness through thoughtful sequencing and the use of props.
