These days it’s hard to imagine a world without “Safety Dance” or “Pop Goes The World,” but back in 1978 in Montreal, Canada, when Ivan Doroschuk started the then punk-rock-turned-New-Wave outfit Men Without Hats, he surely only dreamed he’d write two globally recognized smash hits. And he definitely had no idea his songs would be heard everywhere from McDonald’s restaurant ads and Alaska Airlines commercials to multimedia Super Bowl campaigns, not to mention the now-infamous Tide Pods “Pop Goes the World” campaign and the global soccer chant at UEFA Euro 2024.
Back then, Ivan was joined by his brother Colin Doroschuk for the better part of the ‘80s, along with a host of other talented musicians, with Ivan as the main songwriter and the constant throughout the years.
With a long string of successful album releases and a 2020 induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, fast forward to 2023, where, as if it was meant to be, the Men Without Hats family ties came full circle when Colin’s lovely and extremely talented daughter, Sahara Sloan, stepped in on keyboards and vocals.
Ivan headed back into the studio with Grammy and Juno Award-winning producer Brian Howes, and the result is the band’s acclaimed new album, On the Moon, out now and the strongest MWH release in decades. Its two singles, the irresistibly fun “I ❤️ The 80s” and the soaring synth-wave anthem “In Glorious Days,” are both earning global airplay. Each is now past the 1.5-million-view mark on YouTube and still climbing, with millions more streams across platforms. Recorded first at Howes’ Black Stove studio in the Comox Valley and finished in Victoria, BC, with longtime producer/engineer/guitarist Sho Murray, and mixed and mastered by industry legends Mark Needham, Howie Weinberg, and Greg Reely, On the Moon is both polished and deeply personal, a sonic journey through reflection, resilience, and renewal.
Coming off massive runs of U.S., coast-to-coast Canadian, and UK/EU touring, with more North American dates rolling through 2027 and the band’s first-ever Australian headline tour on the books, to say the band has “hit their stride” would be the understatement of the year.
The professionalism, musicality, and camaraderie of this group is unmatched, and the energy Men Without Hats brings to the stage is overwhelming. “Incredible,” “brilliant,” “captivating.” These are the words audiences and promoters keep reaching for. Critics agree: Spill Magazine scored On the Moon a 9 out of 10: “Ivan’s knack for writing melodies is the same in 2025 as it was in 1980.”
The current lineup of Ivan Doroschuk (vocals), Sahara Sloan (keyboards + vocals), Sho Murray (guitar), and veteran drummer Adrian White is one for the ages.
MEN WITHOUT HATS will put a smile on your face and some sweat on your brow. And please, remember to DANCE SAFELY!
