About this Event

Meet your fellow Club New Tropic members for a private tour of Oolite Arts new summer exhibit, Where there is power on Sunday, August 8–from 1-2 pm.

The tour will be led by the exhibit’s curators, René Morales, chief curator at Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Amanda Bradley, programs manager at Oolite Arts.

This is the first in a series of IRL perks for you our supporting members. You are welcome to invite a guest. There are two time slots available–please only register for one session at your preferred start time, 1 or 1:30 pm. The tour will run about 30 minutes. Capacity is limited to 20 people per session–RSVP now to secure your spot!

The exhibition’s title refers to a famous quote by the philosopher Michel Foucault: “Where there is power, there is resistance.” The Miami-based artists featured in the exhibition include It should be José Álvarez (D.O.P.A.), Asif Farooq, Edny Jean Joseph, Francisco Masó, Yucef Merhi, Reginald O’Neal, Rodolfo Peraza, Chire Regans, Tony Vázquez-Figueroa, Judi Werthein, Agustina Woodgate, Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. Their works touch on several urgent themes including racial conflict, law enforcement, mass incarceration, cults of personality, mass protests, immigration, the exploitation of natural resources, and digital surveillance.

“Inclusive of both deeply personal and political intersections with power, the exhibition creates an entry point into understanding some of the larger systems that govern our daily lives,” said Bradley.

The headlining artists for the exhibit include Venezuelan artist Yucef Merhi who intercepted the emails of Hugo Chávez from 1998-2004 and has created wallpaper installations out of them. Cuban artist Rodolfo Peraza created IP addresses that track the blocking of information by the Cuban government, between Cuba and Miami, and demonstrates this censorship via pings on a map. Where There is Power also includes work by the late Asif Farooq, who over the course of eight years, recreated the Soviet-era MiG-21 jet fighter, down to the smallest detail, in true scale – entirely out of paper.
