Mellies erste EP „Have Head“ erschien im Frühjahr 2020 und war ein kleines Manifest des Grübelns. Während der urbane Zeitgeist das Denken ein für alle Mal abschütteln und hinter sich lassen will, um einfach mal zu machen, wird die Verkopftheit, das permanente Dinge-Durchdenken bei Mellie ausdrücklich goutiert. Das Ganze kommt daher in einem melancholisch-trüben Sound, der durch die mal disharmonischen, oft aber auch eingängigen Girarrenriffs und die repetitiven, manchmal fast paralysierenden Basslines geprägt ist. Dabei ist der Sound des Trios alles andere als aufgesetzt oder anstrengend, im Gegenteil: Die Musik von Mellie kommt an vielen Stellen im allerbesten Sinne des Wortes dezent, manchmal sogar schüchtern daher. Die krautrockig-repetitiven Stellen erinnern dabei an eine reduzierte Version der frühen Stereolab. Songs wie "First Fridge" wiederum erwecken Assoziationen an die poppigen Stücke von Sonic Youth. Im Herbst wird das erste Album der Band mit dem Titel „I Have ldeas, Too“ auf dem Berliner Label Adagio830 erscheinen.

“Bad Vibes In Mushroom Forest” is the second official solo album by Berlin-based musician Jana Sotzko. While the debut “Drift” (2019) sounded like an introverted inventory of a state of ambiguity and aimlessness, Bad Vibes takes clearer directions: it moves into the forest, under the microscope, on the deck of the research ship. While a bit of melancholy and doubt remain anyway, curiosity and a joy in the fantastic prevail and translate into jazz-influenced experimental pop songs as a form of confused energy.
The 9 songs form a cohesive soundscape that on the one hand expresses connection with nature, on the other hand is interspersed with traces of memory and remnants of technology and in its density is more soothing than repulsive. Folklore and mysticism are present in many song titles and lyrics and are interwoven with the everyday, almost banal, to form psychedelic collages - for the first time also partly in German. “Hoch leben die Moneren” is influenced by minimal music as much as by Krautrock and tells of a seemingly senseless research trip on the ocean. “Museum der Angst” describes the old (nightmarish) dream of being locked alone in a natural history museum at night. Despite everything, there is also consolation: the moon is only the sun in drag and anyway, death has seen enough for today (“Birthdays”).
