About this Event
They were meant to meet in Provincetown, they never made it there. Against all odds, they managed to create the kind of
steadfast writing circle that has now reached its sixth year. Meet the P-town writers as they share their works of prose: John Treat, Edward Kaufman, Joel Freedman, Neda Zahraie

Ed Kaufman is a retired psychiatrist and recovering psychoanalyst. He received
an MFA from Antioch University in creative non-fiction at the age of 74. He is the editor
of six psychiatric books including FAMILY THERAPY of DRUG AND ALCOHOL
ABUSE, Gardner Press, 1989 and written three including PSYCHOTHERAPY OF
ADDICTED PERSONS, Guilford Press, 1994. His creative non-fiction books include
FROM MONKS TO MOUNTAIN GORILLAS , Forked Road Press, 2011 and TALES OF
A Pr*son PSYCHIATRIST:50 YEARS OF CRIMINALIZATION OF THE MENTALLY ILL
AND ADDICTED IN AMERICA, Gray Matter Press. He spent 15 years in New York City
where was Director of Pr*son Mental Health Services for the City and medical director of
1300 patients at the Lower Eastside Service Center. Ed moved To Laguna Beach and
UC Irvine where he was a professor of psychiatry. He is currently a reporter for the
Laguna Beach Independent and proud to be a member of P-town writers.

John Whittier Treat’s 2015 novel about the arrival of AIDS in Seattle, The Rise and Fall
of the Yellow House, was shortlisted for the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay
Fiction. His second novel, the 2022 First Consonants, is the story of a family of stutterers
in the Pacific Northwest,. His new novel, The Seventh City of Refuge, is about the
consequences of risk-taking in a small Washington State town, and will appear from
Phylum Press this fall. Treat’s collection Remembering Our Own: The AIDS Stories is
slated for publication next year. His opinion pieces have appeared in the New York Times,
