In collaboration with CINEMATEK and Polarise, Bozar has the honour of welcoming Swedish director Ruben Östlund. His most recent film, Triangle of Sadness, won several awards in 2022, including that for best European film at the European Film Awards and the Golden Palm at Cannes, as did The Square in 2017. A controversial filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer, Östlund serves as an observer of contemporary cowardice and hypocrisy. His work is often subversive and seeks to do away with social norms and common decency. In doing so, he genially breaks with the Scandinavian tradition of subdued psychosocial dramas by the likes of Ingmar Bergman. Östlund’s humorous and accurate depiction of human social behaviour quickly put him on the international cinema map. Today, he already has over ten feature films and short films to his credit, including both fiction and documentary. CINEMATEK dedicates the month of May to an extensive retrospective on the Swedish director.

Son film le plus récent, Triangle of Sadness, a remporté de nombreux prix en 2022, dont celui du meilleur film européen aux European Film Awards et la Palme d’Or à Cannes, tout comme The Square en 2017. Cinéaste, scénariste et producteur controversé, Ruben Östlund se pose en observateur de la lâcheté et de l’hypocrisie contemporaines. Son travail souvent subversif cherche à abolir les normes sociales et les bonnes mœurs. Ce faisant, il rompt brillamment avec la tradition scandinave des drames psychosociaux tout en sobriété d’Ingmar Bergman. En décrivant avec humour et précision les comportements sociaux humains, Ruben Östlund s’est rapidement positionné comme une personnalité influente du cinéma international. Aujourd’hui, le réalisateur suédois a déjà plus de dix longs et courts métrages à son actif, tant fictifs que documentaires. Au mois de mai, CINEMATEK lui consacre une vaste rétrospective.

Zijn meest recente film Triangle of Sadness won in 2022 heel wat prijzen waaronder die voor beste Europese film op de European Film Awards en de Gouden Palm in Cannes, net als The Square in 2017. Als controversiële filmmaker, scenarist en producer fungeert Östlund als een waarnemer van hedendaagse lafheid en hypocrisie. Zijn werk is vaak subversief en wil afrekenen met sociale normen en algemeen fatsoen. Op geniale wijze breekt hij hiermee met de Scandinavische traditie van ingetogen psycho-sociale drama’s van bijvoorbeeld Ingmar Bergman. Östlunds humoristische en nauwkeurige weergave van menselijk sociaal gedrag zette hem als snel op de kaart van de internationale cinema. Vandaag heeft hij al ruim tien speelfilms en kortfilms op de teller staan, met zowel fictie als documentaire. In de maand mei wijdt CINEMATEK een uitgebreide retrospectieve aan de Zweedse regisseur.
