The Broader Bookshelf Reading Challenge encourages readers to expand their bookshelves and seek out new authors and challenging subjects. Ms. Moreno-Garcia will talk about her novels The Bewitching, The Seventh Veil of Salome, Silver Nitrate and The Daughter of Dr. Moreau. Ms. Moreno-Garcia's work responds to the 2025 Broader Bookshelf prompt "Read a fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction, or thriller novel by a BIPOC author."
Broader Bookshelf programs are funded through the Richland Library Friends and Foundation, the Central Carolina Community Foundation, and the Bagwell Revocable Living Trust in memory of Marianne and Ed Bagwell.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, includingCover art for Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Gods of Jade and Shadow (Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, Ignyte Award), Mexican Gothic (Locus Award, British Fantasy Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Aurora Award, Goodreads Award), Velvet Was the Night (finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Macavity Award), and her newest book, The Seventh Veil of Salome which was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for August 2024. Her newest book is The Bewitching (July 2025), which is a multigenerational horror saga where three women in three different eras encounter danger and witchcraft.
She has edited several anthologies, including She Walks in Shadows (World Fantasy Award winner, published in the USA as Cthulhu’s Daughters). Silvia is the publisher of Innsmouth Free Press. Her fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies.
She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
