Amapola Gallery presents “Sparks and Fire,” works by watercolorist Carol Sparks and potter Sandra Moench. Our July Featured Artists are united by the influence of New Mexico’s shapes, cultures and colors on their work.Carol Sparks is that ever-rarer being, an Albuquerque native from the north valley. There is a softness to her pieces, even when she is conveying the golden brilliance of autumn aspens and cottonwoods. She is a seeker of light and the transparent watercolors she employs portray that beautifully. Largely self taught, she never stops learning as she paints northern New Mexico’s villages and landscapes.
Stoneware potter Sandra Moench absorbed the textures and colors of the Southwest while working in the Navajo Nation as a hospital lab technician. Incised patterns are reminiscent of Native designs. She uses glazes in soft white, blue, green and dramatic black. These kiln-fired vessel—bowls, pitchers and more—are meant to be used, and are all lead-free and dishwasher and microwave safe. And the mugs are not only big enough for a decent jolt of coffee, the handles are ample and comfortable in the hand.
Meet these two talented artists at their reception, Friday, July 5, from 3 to 6pm. The show runs through July at Amapola Gallery.
