About this Event
Join Irish author Brian Dooley, Black and Green: The Fight for Civil Rights in Northern Ireland & Black America, as he explores the historic ties between the U.S. and Irish civil rights movements on the anniversary of JFK’s assassination in 1963.
📍 2pm, Saturday 22 November
📌 Museum of Free Derry
Dooley’s book traces 150 years of connections between activists in Black America and Ireland, showing how the struggles for civil rights shaped and inspired each other. Focusing partly on the 1960s, he highlights how Irish protesters drew lessons from the American South, forged links with the Black Panther Party, and adopted tactics such as non-violent marches and sit-ins.
Dooley primarily works with human rights activists under threat in areas of conflict, post-conflict, or in revolutions. Much of his recent work has been with activists providing humanitarian aid on the eastern front of Ukraine, and on exposing impunity for crimes committed by British security forces during the Northern Ireland conflict.
