[Working with Memory, Remembering, Repetitive Thinking and Suffering]
Almost all of us have had this experience: After an encounter with someone, we reflect on the situation and think they are upset with or mad at us. Repetitive thought sets in re-enforcing and strengthening our concern. We become anxious and this affects our behavior. We feel uncomfortable when we see the person, or maybe avoid them.
And then…we talk with the person and find out they were never upset or mad in the first place. This is a wonderful illustration of the Historical Buddha’s teaching that we make not just the world, but our suffering and happiness, with our thoughts.
This one-day workshop will explore the pivotal and major role that memory, remembering and related repetitive thinking play in our identity and suffering. We will investigate and learn how to work skillfully with these qualities of mind from the perspectives of Buddhist psychology and modern memory research. It will involve meditations, reflections, dharma talks, and small and large group discussions.
The day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat.
