*************Event description from the instructor**************
"Watch out! He's got a knife."
Of course he's got a knife. In the Middle Ages, just about everybody had a knife. So, how did knights learn to stay safe while dealing with an armed violent person?
One Italian master, Fiore dei Liberi, left manuscripts as memory aids for his wealthiest patrons. Since 1999, the Chicago Swordplay Guild (CSG) has been studying these manuscripts to reconstruct a system of medieval combat, known as Armizare, that the master's manuscripts show being used on foot or on horseback, in armor or out of armor, unarmed or with any of the knightly weapons of the time.
Karl Jacobs has been studying this art with the CSG since 2003. In 2005, he earned the rank of Scholar of Armizare in the CSG and has been teaching in the Milwaukee area since then. On Saturday, May 30, he will be visiting Neon BJJ and teaching an introductory lesson on how one of Master Fiore's manuscripts addresses common scenarios where an opponent is attacking you with a dagger. Students will have some hands-on time learning the basic technique, and will then see some additional options shown in the manuscript.
Rubber dagger simulators will be provided. Students are encouraged to wear protective eyewear, such as sports goggles or safety glasses.
