Medieval Food Before "Medieval Food"
About this Event
500 to 1500 AD is the Middle Ages. Rome has collapsed and Medieval life is all about the rise of the church, feudalism, regional kingdoms, population growth, agriculture innovations, geopolitical war, the struggle between peasants and nobility, famine, Black Death, and derring-do from knights of the realm. But dinner still has to get on the table.
Author Jim Chevallier calls his program “Medieval Food Before ‘Medieval Food.” Why that intriguing title? Cookbooks don’t show up until the 13th century, so our speaker used histories, supply lists, statutes, poems, traveler’s accounts, and a good-sized helping of archeology to tell us what people ate in early Europe.
Jim is obsessed with French food, especially bread. Before the Baguette, won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award in 2020. Look for A History of the Food of Paris: from Roast Mammoth to Steak Frites and his most recent work, They Came Bearing Bread: The Hard Lives of the Porteuses de Pain.
