MAZZARELLA/HÅKER FLATEN/RA TRIO & HEAVEN ORCHESTRA
Norwegian bassist and former Chicago resident Ingebrigt Håker Flaten returns to Chicago to present two configurations that represent his deep roots here - an active working trio, and a large ensemble blowout featuring a who's who of the contemporary Chicago improvised music scene.

SET 1 : MAZZARELLA/HÅKER FLATEN/RA TRIO
Nick Mazzarella – alto saxophone
Inbebrigt Håker Flaten – bass
Avreeayl Ra – drums

The ongoing collaboration between alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and drummer Avreeayl Ra brings together three generations of improvised music practitioners. Through a unique creative chemistry, the trio’s music connects the distinctive instrumental voices and compositional sensibilities of each member into a unified expression. To date, the group has recorded two albums for the Astral Spirits imprint: Azimuth, released in 2015, and What You Seek Is Seeking You, released in 2021.

SET 2 : HEAVEN ORCHESTRA
Mai Sugimoto – alto saxophone/flute
Nick Mazzarella – alto saxophone
Dave Rempis - saxophones

For the second set tonight, Håker Flaten reconvenes a large ensemble that made its debut at Heaven Gallery in Chicago back in 2013, featuring an all-star cast of Chicago improvisers drawn from across the scene.
