Maze Garden: A single-sheet book workshop

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to bookmaking through the creation of a small, folded maze book inspired by the garden at Jardins do Bombarda. Working directly in the garden, participants will collect impressions, sensations, and small natural materials, then translate that experience into a hand-drawn map that becomes the structure for a single-sheet folded book.

The single-sheet maze book, drawn from Shereen LaPlantz's techniques in Cover to Cover, uses one sheet of paper, folded and cut, to open into a structure of interconnected paths and chambers — no binding required, but real complexity in how the reader moves through the finished book.

The initial walk through the garden takes its cue from loitering as a deliberate, unhurried way of moving through space. Wandering becomes a way of noticing and claiming space, as Morag Rose writes in The Feminist Art of Walking. Combined with material gathered in the garden and integrated through collage, the folded book becomes a small territory of its own — a place to be entered, and walked through again.

About Francesca:

Francesca Faulin (1985), b. Venice, Italy, graduated in Sociology from the University of Milan in 2005 and completed a Master level course in Fine Art Photography at IPCI — Instituto de Produção Cultural & Imagem. Faulin’s practice focuses on photography, writing, research, the use of archives, and alternative photographic processes, and results in handmade artist books and unique prints. Faulin’s work "L’ombra, l’originale e la ripetizione" has been selected amongst the nine finalists for the Emergentes Award at Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Portugal (2023), long-listed for the OD Prize 2024, and shortlisted for the Festival Revelat 2025. Since 2022, Francesca has presented three artist books—"Perché ti ricordi sempre" (2022), "L’ombra, l’originale e la ripetizione" (2024), and "One Day Here There Will Be a Forest" (2025)—at various events in Portugal.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
