This week's Mayfair Organ Concert is given by Matilda Johnstone (Royal Academy of Music) who will be performing the following programme:
Reger - Organ Sonata No. 2 in D minor Op. 60
i. Improvisation
Saint-Saëns - Fantaisie in E flat major
JS Bach - Prelude and Fugue in E minor BWV 548
Vierne - Organ Symphony No. 2 Op.20

Matilda Johnston is a British-born organist from Lincolnshire, who graduated in July 2024 with a Bachelors of Music (Hons) from the Royal Academy of Music, studying organ with Richard Pinel. Matilda has received a scholarship to study a Master of Arts degree at the Royal Academy of Music commencing in September 2024 as well as starting as organ scholar at All Saints Margaret Street, London. She is the recipient of the Mary Layton Organ Exhibition Award 2024/2025 and has achieved her ARCO.
Matilda is currently the Director of Music at Holy Cross Church and the Organist at St Anthony’s School for Boys. She has been working with Multitude of Voyces and St Wulfram’s Church Choir who are filming new hymns based on modern day themes. As a former organ scholar of The Young Organ Scholars’ Trust, Matilda is working as an ambassador helping to inspire the next generation of church musicians.
Since commencing her studies at RAM in 2020, Matilda performs each year at well-known venues around the UK. Most notably she was invited to perform works by Liszt at Westminster Central Hall and performed Nicolas de Grigny’s Organ Mass alongside the Royal Academy of Music Organ Department. Particular highlights were playing as a soloist alongside Bath Festival Orchestra at Bath Abbey, and performing in a silent film improvisation of ‘Der Golem’ at St Albans Cathedral. Matilda enjoys playing a wide range of repertoire from the 17th century to contemporary music. She has been fortunate to participate in classes with organists such as Nathan Laube, Masaaki Suzuki, Daniel Roth, Paul Goussot and others.
