Makoto James (born 1996) is an Anglo-Japanese organist and accompanist based in London. He combines a busy freelance career with the role of Organist of Holy Trinity, Sloane Square.
Makoto started his musical life at the age of seven as a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral, studying organ with Timothy Wakerell and Jamie McVinnie. He later studied in France, receiving the 'Prix Vidal' for his organ diploma from the Toulouse conservatoire under Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen. He then went up to Oxford as Organ Scholar of Christ Church, where he took a First in Music and accompanied the Cathedral Choir in daily services, as well as in prominent venues around the world, including St John's Smith Square, Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts, and St Thomas's Fifth Avenue, New York.
Recent engagements include solo recitals at The Temple Church and Trinity and St John's Colleges, Cambridge. Other projects include repetiteuring for Figure's production of 'Xerxes' at Opera Holland Park, and organ performances with the likes of the BBC Philharmonic at the 2025 Proms, the Gesualdo Six in performances of Arvo Pärt's Passio, and Charles Jeffrey's 'Loverboy' fashion show at London Men's Fashion Week.
